The $20,000 Tree

Four days after we retrieved the $3000 rock out of our son's ear
a tree fell on our house. 

Yes - FELL. ON. OUR. HOUSE.

and punctured a hole right through our dining room ceiling

The tree fell to the left of the house landing along the line of the roof then hit the chimney. The part of the tree extending past the chimney snapped right in half

We are counting our blessings because we think had the tree fallen to the right it would have come right through the roof/ceiling. However, because it fell to the left it only clipped the corner of the house. We have also come to the conclusion that the chimney, made of brick and cement, took a good brunt of the fall and prevented damage. Well... damage we can actually see. We will of course have to get the chimney inspected to make sure there isn't any structural damage within the chimney. In addition, the formal dining room is the least used room in the house (our every day dinners are shared at the table in the kitchen) and we have not been extremely affected by the inability to use that room. Currently, the room is sealed off and a very loud humidifier is running 24/7 to attempt to dry out as much as possible from the rain.

We have had an adjuster from the insurance company estimate damage of approximately $12,000 to $15,000. Personally, I think he's smoking crack because, in my humble opinion, there is no way that is the amount of the damage done. He's talking about replacing the floors throughout the house because it's all connected and painting the inside of the house because the same color paint goes all the way through. That's only $15,000? I'm not a contractor, but really?

Nonetheless, no one was hurt and that's what matters and as I stated before we are counting our blessings.
